nearly five . daily life photoblogging

by sesame on November 23, 2009

one of the last posts was looking back 2 years and now it comes to that time in november when i think about gemma’s birth…

five years.

she is turning into a little lady now with her long feet and gangly legs.  she wants me to blow dry her hair so it is longer…reaches all the way to her waist that way.

she reads to me at night now.  that means that i can’t spell secret words to her daddy in the car anymore.

her favorite birthday present so far has been a pink lava lamp.

yet still, there is a baby in my big girl…i really don’t mind if she sucks her thumb forever.

before-the-shower-diptych-b

she is getting teased for it at school, but i try to tell her not to be embarrassed…just be herself and that it is her thumb, her decision.

it is one of our first challenges of growing up.

Kids are cruel against each other these days. makes me sad that they're teasing her!
Have a great birthday party Gem :)

they tease one minute and play the next…they just hear what their own parents have told them to get them to stop sucking their thumbs…

That's lovely! My boy loves his thumb too and he's turning 6 in January. He sucks it incessantly at home but never at school. I don't know how he does it!

bless gem…tell her that a little lady called Lauren in England (well Sydney right now!) sucked her thumb until she was 18! And then at university and doing all this traveling…well its made me tempted. I'm going to send her a tee with "I heart thumbsuckers."
because we are the coolest.

Sweet, sweet, sweet. These little milestones in their lives where they want to be so grown up, and we fight them every step of the way. My 6 year old starts coversations "when i was a little girl…" and it always makes me laugh. I wonder if when I am 60 years old, 30 years old will feel 'little' to me. She is so beautiful! oh, and I sucked my thumb until I was 10. :)

This is so so so sweet. Your love for your children pours out of your words and photos!

My son sucks his thumb and it's the cutest thing. He's two so no teasing going on yet…. I hope that she isn't too affected by the teasing.
I'm the oldest of 5 and my sister who is 2 years younger than me sucked her thumb and we'd made a code word to say when we'd see other kids coming so she'd know to stop doing it so she wouldn't get teased.

And you know what? my sister still sucks her thumb. Don't tell her I told you. Of course, she hides it well and you'd never know but when she's tired or we're talking about sentimental things, instinctively her thumb goes up to her lips. Still, the cutest thing ever.

Kids can be so mean. It's just fine she does that, 5 is still a young age. Does Gemma starts first grade next year?
I really don't know how you take so many pictures of your babies that look absolutely awesome. I spent Friday afternoon with my 6 month old niece and from the 28 shots only 3 or 4 are good one. And not even that good lol.
Gemma's the cutest :) Happy birthday for her :) whenever that is.

Every kid has their little vice and I like that you aren't making her feel bad about it. I can't stand it when parents make their little ones feel ashamed of natural habits!

Check out Gemma's awesome hair. You know when she is older she's going to be the envy of most girls around her because I spy some brilliant 'beach hair' in the making! ;)

she gets teased for thumbsucking?!
i still suck my thumb, even though i try not to, and im 15. but i suck my thumb without noticing and my friends think its actually cute, not bad :)
tell gemma that the next time they tease her about it, she should suck her thumb infront of their faces even more, just to annoy them :)

You have probably just taught Gemma the best lesson of her life! She should always be herself. No matter what

I sucked my finger up to 6 years old and when I went to the dentist he told me that my teeth to stay straight I had to stop sucking her thumb and in less than a week I stopped. And Gemma will stop when she finds whatever it takes …

i am fifteen and sucked my thumb was i was young too! i stopped (eventually) but still ended up having to get braces. they arent as cool as everyone makes them out to be. but she shouldnt stop if she doesnt want to. i didnt stop until i was twelve, and even now i still do it every now and then.

Hanna November 25, 2009 at 6:17 am

i even learnt how to ride my bike with one hand just so i could suck my thumb at the same time. my brothers will never let me live that down! *sigh*

Awe so adorable :D but as someone who's parents let me suck my thumb for "as long as I wanted" I do want to say at some point before she gets too old I'd say 8, make her stop or SHE will regret it when she gets older. I was 20 before I stopped and I had buck teeth and it's been 3 years now and my teeth are still moving back down to where they are supposed to be.

Kids are so mean at times. I feel sorry for you and your husband though, in a couple of years there is going to be a long line outside your door with boys wanting to ask out Gemma and Clover. Does Clover suck her thumb?
