i know that i have been living in australia for nearly two years, but on boxing day i felt like i was finally putting down roots.
i organized gemma’s room and moved clover to the nursery.
for all 17 months of her life, our baby girl has been sleeping in temporary accommodations. we have tried our bed, our room, our walk in closet and finally a quiet corner of the guest room. it did not feel right putting kieran and gemma to bed in proper rooms while clover just had a crib like a visitor’s child we were babysitting. but i did. for a year and a half so that we could all sleep.
i am taking back control of my house from the fears i had that this country would not feel like home.
we are not going anywhere. i love this house. it is time to really start showing it. hang up a picture or two.
we were not being mean, there was a good reason to keep clover in dark spots. she is a bit distractable by things such as windows.
(as evidenced by my view of her when she should have been napping…)

since she was not napping anyway, i had to go catch the scene in her new room…

oh and she screams. clover is loud. if you have been following this blog for a bit, you already know that though.
while her protests kept kieran up for a bit, he eventually went to sleep when he was done redecorating his crib. and so did she.

i am so happy to finally have the rooms coming together. i am even going to build a toy box for their legions of stuffed friends. since i have weeded through all their clothes, there are free shelves in the closet to fit all their toys. they have a floor! i know because i actually walked on it!
that declutters the playroom so we can actually use that space for…playing!

now to get to the decorating.. i have so many ideas, but the only things i have bought so far are these 3 prints. i even had them framed. (no really, i did. you can see one in the background of the photos there.)
i am always looking for design ideas, so please leave links to your favorite inspirational sites in the comments! the more homemade and crafty, the better. i have a sewing machine and an empty room to use it in!
i have been nominated for the apartment therapy homies awards (click here and vote by adding my blog to your favorites) and have been going through the other nominees for gems. my blog reader is bursting at the seams now. i am very excited that i found this blog there and am taking notes. so many great ideas for children’s spaces…go and check them all out.
the twins’ room has always been for both of them. the letters were hung on the door when i was still pregnant and the beautiful handmade sunsuits have been waiting there for this summer when they are finally big enough to wear them.
we have a reading spot so that our family love of books gets passed down to the twins.

it is all good. well it will be. now they just have to get over the novelty of having a playmate at bedtime and GO. TO. SLEEP.
gemma is loving her newly arranged room. it just makes sense the way we have it set up now and the plan is to fill the white wall by the side of her bed with her art and framed photos of all her friends and family. she will fall asleep with lovely images. the opposite wall is her favorite shade of purple and only has one fabulous piece of art by shari elf. i love shari elf’s work and have been collecting little pieces for years. she makes art from things she finds…seeing beauty everywhere.
gemma being five years old has lots of microscopic plastic toys. the twins being one year old are drawn to these choking hazards like little moths to the plastic flame.
to let gemma have the freedom to play in her own space we have installed a toddler resistant force field creating a twin free zone…as you can see, clover is devastated.

i am excited for the twins to be in one room. they really are becoming a tight pair. true buddies. and to hear them laughing behind the closed door of their room is just awesome. except for when they should be sleeping. that is not so awesome.

they are totally going to figure out how to get that door open. and like little foreign exchange students, they speak their own language right in front of us so we never really have any clue what they are plotting.
all photos shot on the D3 with my new 50mm f/1.8 edit: f/1.4 *smacks head and once again decided blogging at midnight is a bad idea* lens that i love. a lot.
settings were all over the place and since this has to be my most photo filled single post to date, i am too lazy to go back and try to list them all.
i am happy to answer your questions.

I love this !! you always make me laugh xo I love the 'force-field' and clovers disapproval…too funny! we have a gate for exactly the same reason – but our gate is on hannahs door – to stop her walking around the house at all hours of the night !!
yes, that backfired on us…we have to remember to leave it open at night or gemma can't get to the bathroom!
Love how Kieran is deep in thought looking at the door handle trying to work out the escape plans whilst clover looks like shes just heard footsteps behind and their plot has been busted. Great capture. As always brilliant work.
Awesome photo frames above clovers crib!!
Reading your blog is like going back in time!!! I remember the day I removed my Georgia's twin barrier; it was like Christmas for Mackenzie & Alexander. There has been the odd trip to the ER with Beado's and Polly Pocket shoes being removed from nostrels and I think it would be easier to still have a barrier but at 3 when they are still speaking their very own language and they do work as a team…. nothing seems to stop them! Thank you for sharing.
What a fantastic post! Thank you for sharing your beautiful, sweet life with us!
thank you for coming to look and commenting!
Love your house, it's so clean and fun..I LOVE all the light in your house, mine is soo dark..Baby gates are the best…They are wonderful at tripping your guests and keeping toddlers confined(as long as they wear shoes, phoebe uses her monkey toes to climb over)..I am happy to rerport the first 5 kids did not do this..
YIppee for Clover and her new room…Love the little prints….
Question? How do you ALWAYS get such clean shots indoors? Mine always have an orange tint…I have total photo envy…..I want my shots to look like yours, but UGH….
orange tint? try a custom white balance?

i don't think it will be long before clover tries to climb.
In situations with some backlighting (like the shot where C and K are cleverly plotting their escape), do you ever use the d lighting function?
i am not sure if i have that turned on or not. i don't turn it on for that purpose though. i had to do a curves adjustment layer on that photo in photoshop to bring back some of the shadows.
The best!!! This photos is awesome!!!
this is my favorite post ever. so good.
(i think you got the 1.4, no?)
yes, tired posting…i need to go fix that.
cute post! love the pictures and the kids' new rooms!!! lovely!!
okay, the shot of clover having a kiniption behind the gate?? classic:))))
everything looks lovely:)
I love the clean look of the white walls against the accent walls that give it punch giving it the best of both worlds. The rooms are lovely..and made for exploring..at all age levels. Love your home..and the blog is fantastic. You get my vote.
Poor Clover……..but Gemma looks happy.
Awesome! Feels like I'm right there, getting the grand tour. How awesome for Gemma to have her own space and barrier to keep the littles out. I know my oldest two with they could keep their little bro out of their stuff while they're at school
oh yes, the lure of the older sibling's stuff.
I love this!! Congrats on finally making it feel like home, I know exactly how you feel as I have been living in apartments forever and it just always seems so temporary, like you don't want to decorate- what's the point? But someday, when I get a house, I have a feeling I will go crazy decorating!!! I also love those adorable prints that you purchased and framed! How cute!! Great photos as always, the one of Clover peeking out the window really made me giggle
Love reading your blog, keep up the great work!
haha you always make my day. oh and I also love shari elf and her work. Their on my wall also. She reminds me of you, actually! Im going to go to that website and vote for you.
how funny that you have shari elf pieces too.
what a fabulous post! loving their personalities….too cheeky!
oh, personality plus over here!
I love seeing the corners of people's houses. Such beautiful colors!
The photo of Clover not being happy about the force field is great. That made me laugh out loud.
Reminds me that I have lots of photos to frame and put up and that I need to pick up my camera again and take some pictures again.
pictures are great…take them!
The photos are lovely, as are the captions. I adore reading about your family. :] I've always wondered, though, how you get their eyes so sharp or, for example, the book in the photo of Clover. I would've signed up for your class, but I'm not a parent or even an adult, just a teenager. xD. Thanks for letting us have a little peek at how your life is, though. You're really rad.
there will be something for all beginners in 2010!
What a great post, such beautiful words and photos. I especially love the photo of Clover peeking out the window, and the one where she's "devastated" about the toddler force field. This blog makes my heart smile. I am really enjoying following your journey.
Your photography tips are also very, very helpful! I am not so good at taking kid photos, but I want to become better, even though I don't have my own kids yet, as I have a niece who is growing up so quickly!
If you're looking for home design ideas, I think Kate at picklebums.com could probably give you some links. I can't find them right now, but I think she'd be able to help.
those photo frames above clover's crib are absolutely adorable! awesome! and clover's little back flip. too funny ^^
i really enjoyed reading your blog….your home looks very lovely and im glad you are finally putting down roots there
my name is natalia too but tally for short wow
He he, yes, we have had a gate on Rachel's room for ages now. Gives her a whole new freedom to be a BIG girl, without being "disrupted".
wow so sweet
I love it to watch the pictures from you and your kids ♥
Thank you for sharing your beautiful, sweet life with us!
Your photography's fantastic
I adore Gemma's happiness. You're inspirational. Considering I'm 12 [heh. o.O] and don't know a lot about this kind of thing, I'll learn when I'm a bit older, but if I can start now, why not ? :] If I ever become a photographer, I owe it to you :]
i hope you go for it!
great i love it but gemma is super tanned and im hear in nottingham england freein my butt off
love the story you've told Rachel. microscopic plastic. hate stepping on that!
i vacuumed up something barbie and small right after christmas…i did not tell gemma, but it was an accident…
you have such a beautiful family! Your kids are getting so big and we've really watched them grow up:) so amazing. happy new year!!!
Grrr, I am so jealous of the light in your house Rachel! Dull English Weather just doesn't provide the same quality. I know this is a very ridiculous question but do you rate Adobe lightroom? You see I have it, and it's okay….but I want to invest in Photoshop which I think is the way forward. I think I'll get much more out of my camera – and I am following 'beyond snapshots' religiously for tips..blog of the century!
ooooooo P.S I am redecorating my abode right now and just bought this amazing Nina Campbell fabric…I make all of my own throws, cushion covers etc and this fabric is just divine to sew with – I am sure they’ll deliver in AU…http://www.osborneandlittle.com/
