there was a time when i was afraid of digital…i had been using film for so long. i knew film and i have to say that there have been moments lately that i really miss it. i miss the look i produced with it and i miss the self control i had while shooting. with a limited number of frames, i did not mess around. i shot more prudently. stylistically, i have gotten so used to such smooth images with my d3, that i found the grain of the film images a bit shocking. something to get used to all over again.
i have spent all day going back through my career of images for a story and i found a few film scans…the shot above was one of them. i never made an effort to digitally convert my entire collection as it is just too much. my garage is stacked to the ceiling with client negatives. (yes, i brought them all with me. no, my husband was not pleased.) despite the storage issue, i think i will be pulling that hasselblad out of the closet and shooting a bit with my old friend.
i also miss shooting in los angeles, but that will have to wait a bit longer.
i know i don’t share a lot of client work anymore. it is for 2 reasons. i am enjoying this space as a daily life photo log of my family and the majority of my work is commercial so it is a while between shoot and when i am allowed to share…by that time, i have moved on to the next thing. i am guilty of having a very short attention span.

I am experimenting with a fully manual film camera for the first time. Manual focus and all. It is quite an adjustment. I'm so use to the instant gratification and then there is the extra expense of developing. I developed my first b&w film the other day and I was surprised that I was pretty happy with a lot of the images and fell in love with a few. It's a learning curve though. I feel i have to overexpose a bit now to get the results I want but my composition seems to be much better. The fact that you have to wait for that perfect shot instead of firing off shots in rapid succession really makes a difference. Far more than I actually thought. I have a long way to go with it, but it's fun!
can't wait to see…
I miss film sometimes too. I was comfortable with it. I just got a digital camera last April so, in some ways, I feel like I'm learning photography all over again.
I would've thought this was a recent photo with the digital camera if you hadn't said it wasn't; the colours are just so strong and there's so many different shades of green in that grass. Makes me realize I need to play around with my mum's old slr
I've seen this girl somewhere before…who is she?
Is this one of the McCann sisters?
it is. tatum.
I personally enjoy the photos of your family. The pictures are such a beautiful way to remember, especially the little things. Thanks for sharing a piece of your life!
is this the little girl from the ghost whisperer episode ‘drowned lives’ ?
Yes it is
Shes also in The Time Travelers Wife with her sister
I totally recognize her from "The TIme Travellers Wife"!
Tatum Mccan ?
She's a pretty gil
You took this on my birthday lol
This is my film set on flickr. I really want it to get warm out so I can practice some more. My house is like a black hole and I wouldn't even know how to start using a flash with this camera.

I only used film for a few months, but there is something addictive about it. Sometimes, however, I think that what I miss the most is the relative quiet of the darkroom, and the focus it gave me for my photos.
Anyway, your post inspired me to dig through my prints and scan a couple which I've put on flickr. I've been meaning to do that for so long, but your words got me to finally do it.
Thanks for the post. And even when your focus changes, you're still one of the most disciplined photographers I've followed.
I just read this and smiled as tonight will be my first day back to school attending a film photography class. I'm 41 and can't wait to get into the darkroom. Yeah..feel like a little a kid. Your images are always lovely..thoughtful no matter what medium. Can't wait to see more.
i so love your commercial work … it's just so perfect … i bought a film slr last summer… it's been fun playing with but takes me half the roll to stop looking at the back of the camera after every shot
