starting our own little urban farm

by sesame on May 28, 2010

but the only chicken we will have on our farm is the formerly angry one named clover.

fall is gone in 2 days…i am not ready for winter.  the leaves and colors have made this one of the most beautiful autumn seasons that i can remember.  it does make me miss my home state though.  virginia does autumn well.

it has been pretty mild as far as temperatures go and i am not ready for the cold cold.  neither is clover even though she does not know it yet…she likes to be without clothes (unless it is the barbie/disney princess nightgown) and can get undressed herself.  she is sporting blue lips a lot.  it is just going to get worse.

something i never had in the us and therefore something i have no idea what to do with now…

OLIVES!

our olive trees are heavy with olives and some day i hope to pickle them right up.  (apparently you can’t just eat them off the tree… *blech*)  our front yard farm is going to be amazing with the mini grove of olive trees around it.  i am so excited to get started.  and while everyone has been so nice to suggest we get some of those free chickens to wander around and give us free organic eggs, i am just going to say again that i don’t need the organic poop that we would also be getting for free.  i have enough organic poop from the twins.

Such adorable pictures! Is that a maple tree? It’s so pretty! It’s always sad when autumn comes, because you know winter is not far behind, but man the leaves can be so pretty! In Sheboygan, autumn is hit or miss. Some years it’s just gorgeous and some years the colors are just dull. It’s like a box of chocolates. Wisconsin has a very kind climate for trees, so we have trees everywhere, and when they are all in color it’s so pretty, too.

Black olives you either dry in salt or marinade, I prefer the salted ones. Anyway it’s a bit of work to get it right but definitely worth the trouble. And it’s lots of fun for the kids too…

did you ever read “under the tuscan sun?” the author has lots of olive trees on her property. they get some of them pressed into olive oil locally. I would love to have olive trees! I’d also love to hear more about your farm. I have three kids too, the youngest only 4mos, so I have really very little hope of doing anything much with my vegetable garden this year.

You’ve got such a nice style of photography. I really like the way you can blend your skills with just taking photos of your kids. :)

I’m from Portugal and my mom marinates her own olives. She puts them in a big terra cotta jar with a lid, marinates them with a bit of olive oil, orange slices, oregano, and some fresh garlic cloves.
Hope this helped. ;)

Claudia

P.S.- how lucky you are to have olive trees. that is one of the things i miss about Portugal.
