seeking imperfection

by sesame on July 13, 2010

with a camera phone.

i have decided to do a 365 project of self portraits…all on my camera phone.  writing about certain topics for our book has prompted me to explore things i would not normally take on…like a photo a day of myself for one.  we got a new phones and they are Android ones which means they have a bunch of cool apps just like i have been watching my friends play with on their iPhones for a while.  one i found was this great little camera app called Vignette.  i took a photo with it setting the camera to Toy Camera BW with a square frame and immediately felt like i had found a lost friend.  the resulting image was really so similar to the ones i used to get from the holga that now sits i my closet…empty.  of course there are the tell-tale signs of digital, but man was it close.

and it got me thinking.

i miss the imperfection of film and medium format cameras.  the Yashicamat was probably the best camera i ever owned and i sold it to help buy my first pro digital body, Nikon’s D100.  i thought that was going to be it for photography for me and i could see the end of film.  i can still imagine the end of film, but my thoughts on it have changed.

i am tired of the perfection of digital and frankly i am bored by a large facet of my own photography.  it isn’t that i want to eliminate that side of my work…not at all.  i love a perfectly exposed crisp shot with even tones.  i have never been one to over process.  i like my work clean and real.  even with film, i was never a whimsical photographer.  if anything, my work was darker before.  there was always the clean work i did commercially, but then there was the Holga, the Hasselblad, the Yashicamat, the Minolta, the SX-70, the Contax, the Fuji 645.  two were sold, but most are still in my gear closet lovingly packed away.  i need film and a lab and a good scanner…oh and some more time.

just 2 days into my 365 project and i remember the love i had for imperfection.  for grain.  for contrast.  for lack of color.  for unexpected focus.  for letting the image stand at time of exposure.

so i will be posting weekly to the blog, my 365 portraits and more in this exploration.  while the 365 will be with the phone camera, i may finally get my film and post those results here too.

i would love to see your 365 journey too and will be posting a link widget with my first week collection.  i want to feature some of the ones that inspire me here on my own blog.

we are all seeking something with photography, what are you looking for?

I love those phone pictures! I just finished my project 365. I shot most with my camera but there are some there with my phone. http://www.flickr.com/photos/radiantstar/sets/72157619574507722/

Love this!!

My dad recently gave me his Canon EOS 500 (and not a EOS 500D also known as EOS REBEL T1i), it’s a film reflex camera. He also had a bunch of film (that were supposed to be used before 2004) that I think will have cool effects. I just finished a roll so I don’t know yet how it’ll look like but I’m excited!
I also found a disposable camera at my mom’s that I remember taking out of its closet every once in a while to snap a pic and put it back in. I’m sure there’s 5 years old pics on that thing. I’ve just finished the roll too. I can’t develop film so I’m taking those to professionals ;)

I have followed your stream on Flickr for a long time, and I love your style. The way you shoot and process digital is just perfect. I wish I could do the same myself. It’s interesting to read about your search for imperfection. I love shooting film myself, and I would love to see how you shoot film. When you start doing it again, I would love to have you in my little “why do you shoot film” series on my blog; http://hei-astrid.blogspot.com/search/label/why%20do%20you%20shoot%20film%3F

Love these, Rachael. Great to see something a bit different, and fun too.

I miss the anticipation of film. Waiting for hours while photo’s were processed, never knowing what you were going to get, completely forgetting the photos that were on there. When I was in my late teens my Dad found an old unprocessed film from the 70′s and there were all these great pic’s of my parents sitting on the front porch of their run down first home, smoking (let’s pretend they were cigarettes) and hanging out with their mates. I have them on the wall, they’re really cool.

Looking forward to seeing more of your 365.

I love this post. I just “let go” of film a year and a half ago. I look at my old work and it’s so different now from what I’m producing. Imperfections seemed okay before but now….it’s just different.

I just posted about this very thing yesterday. I’m one sixtieth of the photographer that you are, but I do love the look of film. Love your clean digi images even more. Do check out some of my film shots. 2nd and 3rd images on this post. http://timestwophoto.blogspot.com/2010/07/film-and-other-things.html

I agree! For me, the best images are there to capture a moment, a feeling. Mine are certainly not perfect technically speaking, but they mean something.

It’s interesting: I came to photography seeking perfection. As I go along on my own 365 journey, I find myself seeing the moment and appreciating it more for the imperfections.

I have been looking through your blog recently just for the pleasure it brings me. Your style and the simplicity of what you write. But with this post I just had to stop and write you back. It wasn’t just simple random facts of daily life with beautiful images. It was about the meaning of photography to me. For a while now I have been thinking about photography and perfection. I never thought they were or should be the same. I don’t seek perfection in my images. Or at least I try not to. I’m looking forward to your weekly posts. It will be nice to see some imperfect images again.

It is “Australia Week” on HGTV here in the states. FINALLY saw your House Hunters International show (after wanting to see it for ages!). Love the house. Love it.

Also, I tried to find Gemma’s 5th party pictures from her rock birthday, but can’t seem to find the post. Did you ever post them?

I (re)started 365 on my birthday, to cover my whole 35th year. I am hoping to push myself more creatively, though thus far they’ve mostly been snapshot-ish (time, oh how it eludes me).

I HAVE wanted to challenge myself to take photos with my phone (it’s not even a great one) to really push myself on the creativity level and to slow down.

I look forward to your 365. I love the idea of you doing it completely by phone. :D

I know exactly what you mean!! I’ve been doing a TON with my iPhone – between the ShakeIt (polaroid) and Hipstamatic apps I’m in hog heaven. I finally got my dad’s old Nikon FM out of the closet and took it with me on my road trip to the Bay area last weekend, so here’s hoping the shots turned out…

I’ve been sticking with P365 for the second year in a row, my Flickr is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/trudem/

Just added you as a friend! :) Can’t wait to see what you do with the project!

i love this post … it’s a struggle those of us coming in during the digital age … everything must be perfect focus, perfect color balance, perfect, perfect, perfect … it’s hard to not get sucked in to perfection … but i agree, the non-perfect is so beautiful
