war games or math games…gemma is kind of like a tiny ally sheedy.

by sesame on September 1, 2010

so when i was 12 or so, i loved the movie, war games. loved it.
and it was so absolutely absurd and unbelievable that you could play games with strangers on a computer somewhere else in the world.

totally science fiction.

that was only 21 years before gemma was born.

last night, like most nights, gemma played math games online. she played against kids in other places in the world. it is normal.
no big deal.

totally mainstream.

yet, it is mind blowing when i stop to think about it. what is the world going to look like in another (mere) 21 years?

I know! It’s so crazy how much has changed in such a short amount of time! Will we even be blogging in the next 21 years or will that be obsolete? I for one, hope it lives on. Your daughter is adorable.

I know what you mean! I was just thinking about how amazing it is to see my little one chat to her grandma on skype like its just a normal thing! She is only 2 and also thinks the ipad is her friend!

She looks so studious! She’s a little Hermione Grainger! LOL! I bet she was having fun playing math games.

Yeah, how did I ever survive college (78-83) without a computer. I think the universities had huge computers, because my tuition bill came on a printout, but people didn’t have computers. I had to type all my papers on a typewriter. I graduated in May 1983 and the very next semester one of my sisters had word processing on a simple computer. Now, anyone in a university setting wouldn’t be able to survive without a computer. Now you download and print your own syllabus. Notices that a professor won’t be there for your class come through email. It seems amazing that I got through college, without a personal computer.

Now this, this is a great post. What a fun observation, such a fun thing to read. Not to mention those great photos with that uniform. Gracious! :) I will be thinking about this all night now.

oh gosh….look at that growing up girl. How i do love her so.

I remember when I went over to my friend’s house like every weekend because she had America Online!! oooooh! What fun! I remember that painful dial up sound and how it took a good few minutes to be connected. Also, it costs like ever so much a minute so we had to be timed! Crazy!!!! Our computer at home didn’t even have a modem.

It blows me away every time… What games/site does she play on when she plays against others?

The fact that you made a War Games reference? Makes me love you even more. As if that was even possible!

Just wondering what Gemma’s favorite online math game places are? My son LOVES math and would really enjoy that.

Gemma does Mathletics online. It is something they get through their school.

Thanks for the information. I looked into Mathletics, and while our school isn’t offering it, it is available as a stand alone annual subscription to individuals. I emailed the company and just received a free five day trial. I got my boy signed up for that and we will see how he likes it. Like I said before, he absolutely loves math and I think this might be a great challenge/learning opportunity for him to grow in something he loves. Thanks again!
