Back in August at BlogHer in NYC, I met Ryan from Pacing The Panic Room. Within 15 minutes of talking shop, I knew that we HAD to work together in the future. Ryan threw out an idea about putting together a panel on how we shoot…our film roots and how that makes us the digital photographers that we are today. I said “absolutely”, but was pretty sure the chance of it actually happening was slim to none. I did not get my hopes up, but I did start thinking about a few things. The major issue is that although I can be even more prolific these days, I think that digital has made me a worse photographer. Yep, I said worse. I have become a better photographer in many ways, but I am not sure that has anything much to do with the format and all to do with plain old time and practice. I feel like I am developing some bad habits shooting only with digital cameras and over the last year while writing my book with Peta, I have rediscovered the control and discipline I had when I shot film. I aim to get my photographs right in camera as if I had no other option, just like the film days. In fact, I have pulled my film cameras out of the gear closet and am set to start shooting with them again soon. Ryan seems to share a lot of those same thoughts on the medium and he is a darn fine photographer. And with that all said, I am so very excited to finally be able to announce that Ryan and I will be speaking at the Alt Design Summit in Salt Lake City in January!

Check out what Ryan has to say about it here!

As i said over at the Panic Room, I’d love to attend, but a lack of funds can really get in the way. I’m hoping to really learn some awesome photography skills over the next year with my (not so surprise) Christmas present.
i can’t even tell you how much i wish i could attend that workshop. seriously, you and ryan are pretty much my two favorite photobloggers. so exciting that you get to work and “teach” together! ahhh.
Now wouldn’t that be great – seriously hoping you’re going to do some workshops in Australia sometime soon!!!!! Pleeease
I, too, I would love to participate in these workshops, but unfortunately I can not.

I’m with you. Bad habits.
Will go check out your pal Ryan.
I’ve had fun all summer trying different camera set ups that require more time and patience. I bring my little leica mp and my nikon to outdoor events and then hassy when I’m just exploring.
I’m really looking forward to meeting you at Alt.
