Nice one. Get the zoo membership – its extremely good value for money. The zoo from our front door is 45 minutes – don’t let the journey discourage you. The different points of interest with each trip make it very worth while and you end up spending only an hour or two there each time, making it for an overall more relaxed experienced. Because its unlimited across the year, you end up visiting the zoo much more regularly and planning around it as your daily schedule fills out. We usually dovetail the excursion with other Melbourne type activities: pick one of 1/Ikea 2/ Victoria Street Vietnamese 3/ Pizza’s in St Kilda or visiting friends like your good selves.
