Gemma and the twins are my little sidekicks and of course I take photos OF them all the time. They have all shown interest in taking photos of their own, and I have begun to teach them about light and composition (& unfortunately, the hard way, about formatting the memory card too.) As moms with cameras, often times we are all alone in our passion as our family starts to shy away from the lens. As frustrating as that may be it does not spell the end of photography’s relationship with your family, but rather a transformation. It can be your invitation to involve them. Teach them. My dad taught me and even though he passed away in 1999, my love of photography is a lingering connection to his spirit. I think of him when I pick up my camera and I always will. Pass your passion on down the line and best of all, have fun with your kids. That is how littleSIDEKLICK came about.
littleSIDEKLICK is a new photography project to get you shooting with your kids and I am thrilled to announce that Tamron Australia will be supporting us along the way. While things are still being prepared (there is a lot to this including guides and themes etc…), why don’t you introduce us to your very own littleSIDEKLICKs by using the #littlesideklick tag on Instagram. Jump on the emailing-list to be the first to know about the project when it goes live!

I love it <3
Oooh I have three ‘side kicks’ that will be up for this project!
My twins got cheap point and shoot cameras for their 7th birthdays and they have been taking random photos my bum for the last two years! But we recently resurrected my old Nickon D50 (no flash but still) and I’d love to share some photo outings with them! Can’t wait to find out more!
Very cute and a great idea to get them involved too if they are showing an interest…. What little camera has your daughter got in these pics?
how fun! my three year old likes to join me in my picture taking adventures. gotta love her perspective through the camera lens! how are you enjoying the tamron 17-50 vc lens? i’m looking at the 24-70 vc one but would also be interested in hearing your feedback. thanks!
I have both lenses, Jan. The 17-50 is for my digital crop sensor camera, the D3200 and I use the other on my full frame D3! Love them both! I think the 24-70 is too big/heavy/long for the digital sensor cameras, so the 17-50 is perfect!
thank you! i’m back and forth on two combinations of lenses (i’m upgrading to a d600). get the 28-300 (3.5-5.6 for walk around/all purpose) with the 50 f/1.4 or go hog wild and get the 24-70 (tamron or sigma is more realistic for me) with the 70-200 combo. i really want to go all out with the second option, but since i’m not going to make money on this hobby of mine, it’s hard to justify. sure would feel great in my hands though!
absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED your book and have recommended it to my fellow mom photographer friends. beautiful images and beautifully written.
Sideklick sounds fun!!
I love this!
My girls have been taking photos since they were 2-3 years old!
they used to use the Canon Rebel and now use the 30d and 50d and
sometimes even my 5d….they LOVE IT!

Ooooh, interesting……
My child thinks that dragging a camera everywhere and taking pictures of everything is completely normal. Every one does that, right? So I’m thinking about buying him his first camera for christmas (he’ll be 3 1/2).
Ideally I want something with the lens in the middle of the camera (less likely to have his finger over it), drop-proof, weatherproof, not too much shutter lag, and a bit of image stabilisation would be good too. Anyone have any reccomendations?
Would recommend the Vtech Kidizoom – my almost 3 year old loves it. It’s quite low-spec (only 1.3 MP) but an ideal first camera – very durable and drop-proof. It also takes videos which my son loves
this sounds fabulous. i was in bali and letting the kids use the camera (much to michael’s horror if they dropped it) but they loved it!!
Shannah Kennedy this will be great for them and you! It is going to be a way to not only teach them photography, but to learn to listen to them and see what they see. It is a give and take for both sides!
sounds fantastic!!
Love this idea, Rachel. Five year old Ell would have so much fun with this! She’s always wanting to take over the camera.
I can’t wait to hear more about this, Rachel. She’s not quite ready to take pictures on her own but any day now…
My girl is only 2 and the other day she said “mommy takes pictures” — she has had a camera in her face since day one and she is obsessed with seeing the photo after I’ve shot it.
More and more info coming soon! I promise!
I am so excited to learn about Little SideKlicks in May!!! My 7 yo son is really into photography, but I haven’t started teaching him the concepts yet. Looking forward to what you put out there.
